In the Quechua language, the word pututu means “horn” or “trumpet”, reflecting its original function as a sound instrument used to project calls across vast mountain landscapes.
🐚 For centuries, Andean communities have used the Pututu during ceremonies dedicated to Pachamama (Mother Earth). The sound of the shell is traditionally understood as a symbolic bridge between the ocean and the mountains, uniting water, air, and land.
Beyond ceremonial contexts, the Pututu also served as a practical tool to call communities together (ayllu) and announce important events.
